The Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government owns and operates six golf courses in Lexington.

According to an audit conducted in 2007 the Lexington general fund provides a $1.6 million subsidy for golf courses while four of the six courses lose money. This is a concern as it puts government owned courses in direct competition with privately own courses. In the 2009 budget, Lexington mayor Jim Newberry factored in a $1.2 million loss for golf.

The number of rounds of golf being played each year on Lexington's public golf courses are trending downward. Rounds played fell from 191,364 in 1998 to 141,898 last year.
