Mitch McConnell is one of Kentucky's Senators and is currently the minority leader of the Republican Party in the U.S. Senate. Due to McConnell's seniority and position in the senate, he wields a great deal of power and has been able to help craft legislation that gives more money to the state than it pays in taxes[1].
McConnell successfully defeated Democratic incumbent Walter Huddleston in 1984, and is presently serving his 5th term as a US Senator. Recently, he was in a close race with businessman Bruce Lunsford. When campaigning against Bruce Lunsford, a main argument that McConnell used was that in the previous year, he had brought roughly $500 million in pork to the state-something which Lunsford would be unable to do [2]. This was a move that was in opposition to the message of "no pork barrel spending" from the McCain campaign.
